IEEE 754 float explorer

Show the sign, exponent and mantissa bits of a number as a 32-bit or 64-bit IEEE 754 float, plus its hex encoding and the gap (ULP) to the next representable value. Runs on your device.

Options

live

IEEE 754 float explorer packs value, 3.14 by default, into a float of the width you pick, 32 or 64 bits, defaulting to 64. It shows the sign bit, exponent in biased and unbiased form, the raw mantissa, and hex encoding. A ULP column measures the gap to the next representable float. A non-number or unrecognised NaN spelling is refused before packing.

Questions

What widths are supported?

32-bit and 64-bit IEEE 754 floats, chosen with width, defaulting to 64.

What fields does it print?

Sign, biased and unbiased exponent, mantissa bits, the hex encoding, the nearest representable value, and the ULP gap to the next representable float.

Can I inspect NaN or Infinity?

Yes, value accepts those spellings alongside ordinary decimal numbers.

What happens with an unparseable value?

The tool refuses, naming the input that was not a number.

What is the ULP figure for?

It shows the gap to the next representable float in that width, which is how much precision the format has left at that magnitude.
