GIF to ICO

Build a favicon from a GIF. An ICO holds one still image, so an animated source arrives as its opening frame, wrapped in a PNG.

Input

GIF to ICO puts a single still image in the directory, a PNG of your opening frame. The palette rides along, so a 16-colour source stays a 16-colour picture, and every browser since IE11 reads the result. An animated favicon is what people arrive wanting, and the format cannot hold one.

Questions

Does the animation survive in the favicon?

No. An ICO holds one still image, so an animated GIF arrives as its opening frame only, the same first-frame limitation every GIF source in this matrix has.

How is the frame stored inside the ICO?

Wrapped in a PNG, the same as png-to-ico, so the frame transparency survives and the 256-pixel dimension ceiling applies the same way, scaling a larger source down to fit.

Which engine handles this?

omggif decodes the first frame, jSquash encodes it as PNG at quality 100, and a dedicated ICO wrapper adds the directory header. All of it runs in Node, on the command line, through MCP and in the browser.

What size should I expect?

Small, typically a few kilobytes, since a favicon-sized PNG wrapped in a thin ICO header rarely grows large regardless of the source GIF size.

What is the reverse page?

There is none. ICO has no decoder on this site at all, so nothing here converts an ICO back into a GIF or any other format.
