GIF to JPG
Convert a GIF to JPG. A GIF dither is single-pixel noise, the one thing JPEG smooths away, so flat shaded areas come back blotchy.
GIF to JPG smooths away exactly what a GIF is built from: shades it has no room for, faked by scattering pixels of two neighbouring colours. Single-pixel scatter is the first thing JPEG's smoothing removes. Flat areas read as mottled afterwards, and raising quality mostly buys a faithful copy of the noise.
Questions
Why does a flat-shaded area come back blotchy?
Because a GIF dither pattern, single-pixel noise used to fake more colors than its 256-entry palette holds, is exactly the kind of detail block-based JPEG compression is built to smooth away. What looked like a smooth gradient can come back mottled instead.
What happens to animation?
Only the first frame is used. The decoder hands back one still image rather than a sequence, so an animated GIF converted this way loses every frame after the first.
Which engine handles this?
omggif decodes the first frame and jSquash encodes the JPEG through mozjpeg, both running in Node, on the command line, through MCP and in the browser without needing a browser tab.
What size should I expect?
Usually smaller than the source GIF for a photographic image, since lossy JPEG compression outperforms a 256-color palette on continuous tone pictures. A GIF built from flat graphics or line art can land at a similar size or larger.
What is the reverse page?
There is no dedicated jpg-to-gif page. PNG to GIF is the nearest named pair, and Convert image can write GIF from a JPG source directly.
