HEIC to AVIF

Re-encode a HEIC as AVIF. Same HEIF container, a different codec inside, so the size barely moves and old software still refuses the result.

HEIC to AVIF swaps the codec inside the HEIF container, HEVC for AV1, and both files stay ISO Media. What you gain is a format browsers display without an add-on. Nothing is rewrapped: the photo is decoded to pixels and encoded again, a second lossy generation over an image that was already lossy.

Questions

Does this change much about the file?

Not the size, usually. HEIC and AVIF share the same HEIF container and differ only in the codec inside it, HEVC against AV1, so re-encoding between them lands at a similar size for a similar visual quality.

What do I gain by converting?

Wider decode support in some software, and none in others; AVIF is not universally supported either, so a program that refused the HEIC is not guaranteed to accept the AVIF. Metadata is dropped, since the pipeline decodes to raw pixels first.

Which engine handles this?

libheif-js decodes the HEIC and jSquash encodes the AVIF, both WebAssembly. Both stages run the same in Node, on the command line, through MCP and in the browser.

What size should I expect?

Close to the original HEIC, sometimes a little larger or smaller, since both codecs are modern and similarly efficient on most pictures.

What is the reverse page?

There is none. Nothing here writes HEIC, so AVIF to HEIC is not possible on this site.
