Soundex / Metaphone lists an American Soundex code and a Metaphone code for every word in a pasted text, one row per word. Soundex always returns four characters padded with zeros, while Metaphone here is a simplified approximation covering common digraph and silent-letter rules only. Non-letter characters inside a word are stripped before either code is built.

Questions

What is the difference between the two codes?

Soundex is the classic American algorithm: a fixed four-character code, one letter plus three digits, built from a table that groups similar-sounding consonants. Metaphone here is a simplified pass covering common English digraph and silent-letter rules such as PH becoming F and silent initial KN. It is not a byte-exact port of the original published Metaphone algorithm, only a close approximation.

How are non-letter characters handled?

They are stripped from each word before either code is computed. A word like "don't" is reduced to DONT first, so punctuation never changes the Soundex or Metaphone output.

What if my text has no words in it?

The tool refuses with "no words found". Words are matched with a plain A to Z pattern, so a file of only numbers or symbols produces nothing to code.

Why does Soundex always come back as four characters?

Because it is padded with zeros, or truncated, to exactly that length by definition. A short word like "Oz" and a long one like "Extraordinary" can both end up looking similarly short in their code, since Soundex only ever keeps the first letter plus three digits.

Can I trust Metaphone here for a published word list?

Treat it as a useful approximation rather than a reference implementation. The code comment in the source is explicit that it covers the common rules and is not guaranteed to match every test vector from Lawrence Philips' original algorithm.
