Extract subtitles from video

Pull every text track out of an MP4 or MOV as its own .vtt or .srt file, reading the wvtt/tx3g sample tables directly rather than through mediabunny, which can mux a WebVTT track but not read one back. A packet-level read with no decoding, so this runs in Node, the CLI and MCP as well as the browser.

Input

Options

Extract subtitles from video opens an MP4 or MOV container and writes each text track out as a separate VTT or SRT file. It reads the wvtt and tx3g sample tables at the packet level, since the muxer library here writes WebVTT but never parses one back out. Nothing decodes, so it runs the same in Node, the CLI, or MCP.

Questions

What subtitle track formats does it read?

WebVTT tracks, stored as wvtt, and 3GPP Timed Text tracks, stored as tx3g, both muxed directly inside an MP4 or MOV container.

Why does it read the sample tables directly?

Because mediabunny has a writer for WebVTT tracks but no matching reader for getting one back out. Parsing the wvtt and tx3g sample tables by hand is what makes extraction possible here.

What if my video has no embedded text track?

The tool refuses by name, since most video files carry subtitles as a separate .srt or .vtt file rather than muxed inside the container, and there is nothing here to pull out.

Can I choose the output subtitle format?

Yes, vtt or srt, vtt by default. Every text track found is written out separately in the format you pick.

Does this need a browser to run?

No. It is a packet level read with no decoding involved, so it runs in Node, on the command line and through MCP as well as the browser.
