N-up / booklet imposition

Puts several pages on one sheet in a grid, 2 gives two per sheet, 4 gives a 2 by 2, and so on, filling the grid in reading order. Keep the paper size scales the pages down so four of them share one sheet the size of your page, which is the setting that saves paper. Grow the paper keeps them full size and enlarges the sheet instead, so 4-up on A4 gives you A2.

Space around and between the pages, in points, so there is somewhere to fold, staple or trim. Zero puts the pages edge to edge, which prints fine and leaves nothing to cut into. A gutter too large for the grid is refused before anything is drawn, and the message names the sheet size it would not fit on.

Printing a document as a folded booklet. Pages are reordered into saddle-stitch order and laid out two per sheet, so you print double sided, flipping on the short edge, fold the stack, and the pages read in order.

Set a group size. Paper will not take fifty folds, so a long document is folded in groups of pages and the groups are stacked in order, which is how a real book is bound. The group is a multiple of 4, commonly 8 or 16, and leaving it blank folds the whole document as one group, which works up to roughly 40 pages.

Booklet mode pads with blank pages until it is, which is what the fold requires. The blanks land at the end of the reading order, as they would in a printed booklet.

It is derived from the number you give: the columns are the square root rounded up, and the rows follow. 6-up is therefore 3 by 2. A number the grid does not fill, such as 3, leaves the spare slots empty and the preview says how many. Booklet mode is always 2-up, because that is what a fold produces.

Each page keeps its own shape. The slot is sized to hold the largest page in the document, and every page is scaled into its slot and centred, so nothing is stretched or cropped. A document mixing upright and sideways pages comes out with both intact.
