N-up / booklet imposition lays several PDF pages onto one larger sheet, either in a grid of your chosen size or reordered for saddle-stitch folding. The grid is derived from the number you give: columns are its square root rounded up. Every sheet is measured from page one, so a document of mixed page sizes gets stretched to fit.

What does n-up do?
Puts several pages on one sheet in a grid, 2 gives two per sheet, 4 gives a 2 by 2, and so on, filling the grid in reading order. The sheet is sized from the original page, so a 4-up sheet is twice as wide and twice as tall as one page.
What is booklet mode for?
Printing a document as a folded booklet. Pages are reordered into single-signature saddle-stitch order and laid out two per sheet, so you print double-sided, fold the whole stack once down the middle, and the pages read in order.
What if my page count is not a multiple of four?
Booklet mode pads with blank pages until it is, which is what the fold requires. The blanks land at the end of the reading order, as they would in a printed booklet.
Can I choose the grid shape?
It is derived from the number you give: the columns are the square root rounded up, and the rows follow. 6-up is therefore 3 by 2. Booklet mode is always 2-up, because that is what a fold produces.
